That's right ladies and gentlemen, step right up, you can lose 20lbs in just 17 hours by eating nothing but cupcakes and uncooked ground beef!... OR NOT.
If you do lose that kind of weight, it's because something horrible was in that raw uncooked beef. And we hope you get medical attention. But if you think this sounds far-fetched, you might be surprised at the kinds of bizarre diets out there on the internet right now, fighting and clawing for your attention. Here are just a few:
"Juice Cleanse" - Drink and eat nothing but fresh, raw vegetable / fruit juices. This is the best diet ever conceived by companies that produce and sell electric juicers.
"Cabbage Soup Diet" - It is, very much, a diet wherein you consume cabbage soup.
"Master Cleanse" - A combination of cayenne pepper laced lemonade, salt water and herbal laxatives. It'll definitely clean you out. Eh-hem.
"HCG Diet" - If you happen to be in the mood to inject yourself repeatedly with a (now illegal) chemical component harvested from the urine of pregnant women, and which scientists claim offers no particular benefit at all and can in fact be harmful... Then this is the diet for you! (Seriously, this is a real thing, and misguided people have really done it.)
"Paleo Diet" - The theory here is that eating modern foods cooked in modern ways isn't ideal for your body - so this is how the caveman do. Meat, Veggies, Fruits, Grass, Dirt and Lice are on the menu. Grass seeds, are not.
"Mineral Wraps" - If you're familiar at all with osmosis - and if not, ask your neighborhood gardener how they deal with slugs - then you'll understand why this is a brilliant way of making someone feel like they've lost weight... For about one day.
"Raw Food Diet" - Use your imagination. Now stop using your imagination.
There are many, many more out there. Those are just some of the more popular choices right now. You can definitely go weirder - there's the old trick where you drop your fork on the floor so you wont want to eat with it anymore. That goes over well at house parties. Or the one where you wear clothes that are too small so you'll be uncomfortable and not want to eat as much. I hear that works well. Google "people seen at Walmart" for evidence of this.
So what's the deal? Which diet is right for you?
That depends. Are you serious? Do you actually want to lose significant weight and stay in shape? If not, then go for broke and do whichever diet sounds the most appealing. Heck, get online and tweet about it as you're doing it. That'll make you stand out from the crowd for sure!
If you ARE serious, then picking a random fad diet isn't the solution. You're not going to lose 40lbs and feel better than you ever have in your life because you bought an expensive juicer and started living on carrot puree. You might turn orange, yes. That really can happen. But it's not the way to get to where you're trying to be.
The solution to losing weight and keeping it off is exactly the one you were most hoping it wasn't. You've got to DESTROY your comfort zone.
You have a comfort zone. Everybody does. Yours, unfortunately, is a place where you have gained and continue to maintain and unhealthy weight. You can't just duck out of it for a week, lose a bunch of weight, and come running back with a, "Whew, I did it!"
No, sorry, but that comfort zone is not your friend. It is your enemy. It must be defeated. If you want to spend the rest of your life in a new and improved body, that starts with a new and improved set of habits. A new and improved way of life.
Yes... You must exercise.
No... You may not bring home Twinkies.
Yes... You must avoid fast food.
No... You may not switch to "diet" cola and hope for the best.
Ask anyone who has lost weight, gotten back in shape, and maintained their results for some time. Those are the people who have actually done what you wish you could do. Ask them - how many doughnuts do they eat per week? How much soda pop? How many hours do they spend sitting around watching tv or playing candy crush saga?
Now ask them how often they exercise. How often do they buy, cook and eat vegetables? How do they govern their meal routine? How many midnight snacks do they eat?
As I said, the REAL answer is exactly the one you hoped it wasn't. There's no easy way out. It's going to take discipline, hard work, sacrifice...
But there IS good news! When you begin to see the results of all this hard work, your confidence and self esteem will be higher than you ever imagined. When you can confidently stand amongst those friends who have walked the same path, you'll completely understand when they say it was the best thing they ever did for themselves.
And when you get there, you will suddenly realize that your old comfort zone was just an illusion. It no longer exists. You've made a new one. One you CAN live in, healthfully.
Many people wait until they see serious medical problems, before they finally decide to take their weight and their health seriously. Why wait til you're stuck in the E.R. to make a change for the better?
There are options out there that can help. One of the best, fastest ways to get started is attending a fitness camp. You can learn to eat healthier foods in healthier portions, get your body used to a healthier routine and schedule, lose substantial weight, gain strength and flexibility... and do it all under the supervision of highly trained experts whose only goal is that you leave weight loss camp in better shape than you arrived.
